The event, themed “Building and Bridging Professional Skills: Grasping Mixed Methods Research for Effective Problem Solving,” aimed to equip faculty members and employees with essential knowledge and technical skills in conducting mixed methods research.

The half-day session gathered faculty members, administrative staff, and personnel across departments, reflecting the University’s inclusive approach to professional growth and capacity development. The program commenced with an opening prayer and the singing of the National Anthem, followed by an inspirational message from Dr. Aurora P. Tolentino, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who emphasized the importance of research as a vital tool in addressing contemporary challenges and encouraged the UBLC community to continuously strengthen their scholarly competence.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Pastor R. Arguelles Jr., Director of the Research and Publications Office, emphasized the importance of nurturing a research-oriented community that extends beyond the faculty and staff, including members of the security and maintenance teams. This vision, he said, embodies UBLC’s commitment to a holistic culture of inquiry and lifelong learning.

The highlight of the seminar was the lecture-discussion led by Dr. Shielilo R. Amihan, Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs, and the Dean of the Graduate School at PHINMA Laguna Network, who has published numerous research studies since 2023. Introduced by Mrs. Michelle M. Malsi, Dr. Amihan guided the participants through an engaging and comprehensive discussion on quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research approaches, drawing attention to their respective strengths, weaknesses, and appropriate applications.

To make the session interactive, Dr. Amihan invited participants to choose between two symbols: a heart for those who believe in a single, definitive answer, representing the quantitative perspective, and a like for those who acknowledge multiple valid answers, representing qualitative inquiry. This activity served as a creative introduction to the duality and complementarity of research methods.

Dr. Amihan also provided crucial insights into the proper use of statistical tools, noting common misconceptions such as the misattribution of Slovin’s formula, which he clarified should be credited to Cochran. He explained that parametric methods generally yield more robust results than non-parametric ones and discussed factors like attrition rate, ethics, administration, and scoring systems essential for sound quantitative research.

When discussing qualitative research, he highlighted its strength in exploring human behavior and social realities within specific contexts. He pointed out that this approach is ideal when dealing with unique phenomena, insider perspectives, or issues requiring contextual understanding, although it also presents challenges such as time constraints and limited generalizability.

The lecture culminated in an in-depth exploration of Mixed Methods Research (MMR), including its major designs – Triangulation, Embedded, Explanatory, and Exploratory. Dr. Amihan elaborated on how these models integrate both quantitative and qualitative methods to generate comprehensive insights, emphasizing their strengths in validation, efficiency, and applicability in problem-solving. He also acknowledged their challenges, particularly in terms of time, integration, and resource demands.

During the open forum, participants actively engaged in discussions on applying research methodologies across disciplines, including best practices for guiding student researchers and ensuring methodological accuracy. Dr. Amihan noted that even high school students can meaningfully engage in action research when properly guided by mentors and supported by experts such as statisticians.

The seminar concluded with the awarding of a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Amihan, followed by closing remarks from Ms. Marilou Cadorna, HRD Officer, who expressed gratitude to the Research and Publications Office for spearheading the event and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to promoting a culture of research and innovation.

Through this initiative, UBLC continues to demonstrate its dedication to academic excellence and professional development, ensuring that its community remains at the forefront of research competence and educational advancement.

To strengthen its institutional research culture and enhance the scholarly competence of its academic community, the University of Batangas Lipa City (UBLC), through the Research and Publications Office, conducted a Research Capability Building Seminar on August 22, 2025, at the Tiered Hall, Building C.
