Ar. Manolo I. Merhan, a distinguished architect and Program Chair of the Bachelor of Science in Architecture of the University of Batangas Lipa City (UBLC), has successfully passed the Professional Panel of Experts Interview conducted by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Architect Monitoring Committee, with the official results released on November 25, 2025, formally recognizing him as an APEC Architect.

The recognition was conferred following a rigorous evaluation process that assessed Merhan’s educational background, post-graduate practical experience, and professional practice as a registered architect in the Philippines. This milestone marks a significant achievement in his professional career, granting him eligibility to practice architectural services across APEC member economies with reduced barriers to recognition.

The APEC Architect Project, an initiative of the APEC Human Resources Development Working Group (HRDWG), was established to facilitate the mobility of architects throughout the Asia-Pacific region by promoting mutual recognition of skills and qualifications. Since its inception in 2000, the project has created a framework for professional recognition and established a Register of APEC Architects who meet common standards of education, training, and professional practice.

In the Philippines, the APEC Architect Monitoring Committee (AAMCOP), composed of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), oversees the registration process. Candidates undergo thorough evaluation by a three-person Panel of Experts representing these organizations, ensuring compliance with APEC standards.

Merhan’s registration as an APEC Architect reflects his exceptional professional competence and underscores UBLC’s commitment to producing graduates who excel both locally and internationally. As Program Chair of the BS Architecture program, his achievement also contributes to the University’s ongoing internationalization efforts, highlighting UBLC’s dedication to cultivating expertise that goes beyond academic excellence and empowering professionals to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of the Asia-Pacific region.

In addition, this achievement exemplifies the University of Batangas Lipa City’s steadfast alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (UNSDG 4) on Quality Education. By fostering internationally recognized professional competencies, advancing global standards in architectural practice, and nurturing transformative learning experiences, UBLC demonstrates its unwavering commitment to providing inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education.

This milestone elevates the stature of its academic programs and reinforces the University’s dedication to cultivating globally competent professionals who contribute meaningfully to sustainable development, knowledge exchange, and the progressive growth of societies across the Asia-Pacific region.
