UB held a solemn commemoration of the EDSA People Power Revolution at the Vicente A. Mayo (VAM) Corporate Center, reminding students and faculty that peaceful civic action changed the course of the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Augusto C. Africa, Basic Education Director and Senior High School Principal, hosted the program attended by the UB community, including senior high school students, college students from various departments, administrators, faculty, and staff. The ceremony honored the historic events of February 22\u201325, 1986, when millions of Filipinos converged along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Metro Manila in one of the most powerful nonviolent transitions of political power in modern history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UB leaders present at the event underscored the importance of remembering the revolution\u2019s lessons of unity, courage, and peaceful action. UB President Lily Marlene J. Hernandez-Bohn, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Aurora P. Tolentino, Senior Vice President for Administration Mr. Alex A. Ramos, and Assistant Vice President for Legal Affairs Vicente Bernardo V. Mayo, Jr. stood with the community in affirming the institution\u2019s commitment to democratic principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speakers and performers highlighted key aspects of the revolution through artistic expression. Teatro Anino and Tanghalang Dal\u2019wa-Singko (TDS) dramatized historical moments, illustrating how various sectors \u2013 from students and religious groups to ordinary citizens \u2013 came together to demand justice, integrity, and democratic renewal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Hilary Jhoy C. Magsisi (Bachelor of Multimedia Arts 1-1), champion of the Vocal Duet Competition at the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Batangas Provincial Meet, opened the tribute with <em>Magkaisa<\/em>. Composed by now Senator Vicente \u201cTito\u201d Sotto in 1986 and performed originally by Virna Lisa (Virna Lisa Loberiza), the song became one of the defining anthems associated with People Power, capturing a nation\u2019s longing for unity and change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UB Indayog Kultura continued the musical homage with <em>Malaya ka na, Pilipino<\/em>, a piece composed by Dante Beriong and arranged by Nathaniel Arnel Depano that celebrated Filipino freedom and the legacy of democratic struggle. UB Chorale followed with <em>Pilipinas Kong Mahal<\/em>, a patriotic classic composed by Francisco Santiago with lyrics by Ildefonso Santos in 1931, reminding listeners of the deep roots of national pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a personal reflection that brought history closer to home, Assistant Vice President for Legal Affairs Vicente Bernardo V. Mayo, Jr. shared his own account of Martial Law and the EDSA Revolution era. He recalled being a college student during the 1980s and vividly described the uncertainty and fear that gripped activists and students alike, as well as the turning tide when civilians stood alongside defecting military personnel in peaceful protest \u2013 an act emblematic of the People Power Revolution\u2019s unique character of nonviolent resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ceremony concluded with a symbolic act of peace as members of the UB community offered white roses to men in uniform, representing the nonviolent spirit that defined the 1986 uprising and continues to inspire future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By commemorating this milestone, UB advanced the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by fostering historical awareness and critical civic consciousness, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, by honoring nonviolent democratic action and respect for human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through memory, music, and message, the University of Batangas reminded its community that freedom \u2013 secured through collective courage \u2013 requires vigilance, understanding, and continued commitment to democratic values.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Batangas did not simply gather on February 25, 2026, to look back at history \u2013 the community assembled to recall why ordinary Filipinos, armed only with faith, courage, and unity, reclaimed democracy in 1986.
