Spirit, intellect, and purpose – these values define Atty. Vea Gypsy M. Abante, an alumna of both the University of Batangas (UB) Bachelor of Science in Legal Management program (BS LegMa, Batch 2016) and the UB College of Law (Juris Doctor Class of 2021), has been appointed Assistant Secretary for General Administration and Support Services Group at the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) at DSWD Central Office on October 15, 2025.
In an exclusive interview, Atty. Abante credited UB for shaping her character and confidence, expressing gratitude to her mentors who constantly challenged their batch to strive for competence, dedication, and excellence.
One piece of advice that stayed with her came from President Emeritus Dr. Hernando B. Perez, which shaped her work ethic – to remain consistent, determined, and resilient in the face of challenges.
“In law school, you don’t always have to be the smartest; what you need is perseverance and hard work,” shared Atty. Abante.
Marking her appointment as a significant milestone in her government career, Atty. Abante reflected on her journey from a Job Order employee in a Local Government Unit to serving as an Executive Assistant in a national agency.
“This position reflects that hard work, dedication, and perseverance are recognized and valued,” she said.
While acknowledging the weight of her new responsibility, Atty. Abante drew inspiration from one of UB’s core values – service to fellowmen – believing that greater responsibility comes with greater purpose.
“I do not see this appointment as an entitlement, but as a responsibility to serve others,” she emphasized. “It allows me to contribute to DSWD’s mission of serving marginalized and disadvantaged individuals.”
In closing, Atty. Abante shared a heartfelt statement that embodies her commitment to public service: “To make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.”
Atty. Abante assumed office on October 27, 2025, carrying with her the spirit of a true public servant – one committed to intellectual growth, integrity, and purpose.
