The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of the University of Batangas (UB) held an Anti-Violence Against Women and Children (Anti-VAWC) Campaign Plenary on November 22, 2024, at the UB Auditorium to raise awareness and inspire collective action against gender-based violence.
Conducted under the Gender and Society with Peace Education (GASPE) course, the event aimed to deepen students’ understanding of gender issues and promote a culture of respect, empathy, and accountability.
The plenary featured two distinguished speakers. Ms. Maren Deal Cruz-Baet discussed the issue of Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) in the Philippines, emphasizing the need for vigilance, digital literacy, and responsible online behavior. Atty. Jonathan Paolo Dimaano presented the legal framework surrounding VAWC, the Safe Spaces Act, and related laws, giving students a clearer understanding of legal protections for victims and the responsibilities of citizens in preventing abuse.
Organized by the Social Science Department and the GASPE Faculty, led by Dr. Mary Jean Alday, the session encouraged active student participation through meaningful discussions. Speakers underscored that the fight against violence begins with understanding, respect, and concrete action.
According to organizers, the plenary effectively fostered awareness, empathy, and renewed commitment among students to stand against all forms of gender-based violence.
The initiative reflects the college’s ongoing advocacy for inclusivity, social responsibility, and human rights education, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5: Gender Equality and SDG 4: Quality Education.
