The University of Batangas (UB) College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) proudly presented “Likhalina 2024: A Celebration of Batangas Heritage” on November 27, 2024 at UB Auditorium.
The cultural and educational event showcased the outstanding artistry of two local artisans: master balisong maker Sgt. Nemesio Maligaya and Ms. Angel Bombase, the creative force behind Bordado ni Apolonia.
Participants experienced firsthand the living traditions of the province through live demonstrations, exhibits, and interactive sessions. Sgt. Nemesio Maligaya, known as the Legendary Balisong Maker, demonstrated the intricate process of crafting the traditional Batangas balisong. He showcased how this symbol of precision and pride thrives by adapting traditional techniques to modern design sensibilities.
Alongside him, Ms. Angel Bombase shared her expertise in the art of Filipino embroidery (burda). As the founder of Bordado in Apolonia, she explained how she skillfully blends handwoven craftsmanship with contemporary fashion and community empowerment. The event encouraged the public to support these local artisans, helping to sustain vital cultural industries and local livelihoods.
“Likhalina 2024” successfully celebrated the creativity, skill, and cultural spirit of Batangueño artisans. By combining education, heritage, and innovation, the event fostered a deep awareness of Filipino artistry and inspired attendees to value cultural preservation as a lifelong learning pursuit. Through this initiative, the University of Batangas College of Arts and Sciences actively contributes to the realization of SDG 4: Quality Education.
